WSU: TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) Program


The TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) Program is a federally funded TRIO Program by the U.S. Department of Education. The TRIO SSS program is one of six (6) Federal TRIO Programs providing academic assistance and support services to students at Wayne State University. Authorized in 1968 by the Higher Education Act of 1965, the TRIO SSS program is designed to assist first-generation and income-eligible students with documented disabilities navigate college successfully.

Our Mission:

Our mission is to address the educational and social barriers preventing students with disabilities from succeeding at the postsecondary level through the provision of support services. We understand the importance of providing best practices in student development and aim to achieve educational equity and culture change for student success.

Our Goal:

The goal of TRIO SSS is to increase the postsecondary persistence and graduation rates of income-eligible students, first-generation students, and students with disabilities. TRIO SSS promotes and increases the retention and graduation rates of students with disabilities by delivering a comprehensive suite of academic, social, and personal services that assist students in achieving academic success.

Dedicated TRIO disability specialists work with students to develop a plan for academic excellence that leads to successful degree completion and preparation for their chosen career or graduate program.

The TRIO SSS program offers specialized services including:

  • Financial literacy workshops
  • Career skills development
  • Graduate school preparation
  • Academic support
  • Professional mentorship
  • Exposure to cultural, academic, and social events
  • A comprehensive learning community

Program Eligibility:

To qualify for the TRIO SSS program at WSU, applicants must meet certain eligibility requirements:

  • Be a U.S. Citizen or permanent resident
  • Be enrolled or accepted for enrollment at WSU as an undergraduate student
  • Be registered with Student Disability Services
  • Need academic support
  • Additional considerations: First-generation status and/or a Pell Grant recipient
